PowerVR G6630 Announced by ImaginationTechnologies – To Be the Most Powerful GPU to Date

Imagination Technologies are behind the PowerVR series of GPU’s available in most Android and Apple devices. Direct competitors are ARM and their Mali series of GPU’s, NVIDIA and their Tegra devices and Qualcomm’s Adreno GPU’s. PowerVR has been the hardware of choice for Apple to integrate in their devices, with a new one available for every new iPad device.

The Apple tablets offer extreme performance when it comes to GPU capabilities. We should think so, especially given the large number of pixels the component has to push, because of Apple’s Retina displays. The PowerVR series has been available on the market for a long time, since integrating GPU’s into mobile devices was considered a thing of the future.

Imagination Technologies announced their newest addition to the PowerVR series of GPU’s. The PowerVR G6630 features a new manufacturing technology, including one core and six clusters and is the fifth member of the Series6 ‘Rogue’ graphics IP family. The rethought manufacturing process makes it capable of offering over 60 times the performance of the current series 5 components, while this is made possible with only one GPU. The six clusters inside the core can be used depending on the complexity of the task, to preserve energy. The new series will also be compatible with the latest Microsoft DirectX 11.1, available only in Windows 8.

NVIDIA Revenue Reaches Record $1.20 Billion in Q3, Thanks to Tegra 3 Slates, Kepler GPUs

Just as predictions said, Nvidia’s earnings were again record breakers, with a big increase in Q3 to $1.20 billion, 15.3% higher than in Q2. They were also up 12.9% from the same period last year. Profits also grew to $209.1 million, that shouldn’t surprise us, seeing how the Tegra 3 chip was chosen by so many tablet makers.

The famous Nexus 7 has one at its core and so does the Microsoft Surface RT, plus many other popular gadgets out there. The Consumer Products division at Nvidia, the one that handles the Tegra family and other hardware registered a 27.6% increase in revenue for the quarter. In spite of the expectations of a dropping PC market, the consumer GPU unit had a 10% increase in revenue from last quarter, thanks to the Kepler based products, that reached lower price points, while notebook revenue continued to rise.

Nvidia also decided to issue dividends to shareholders and extended its current stock repurchasing program. The predictions for Q4 include revenue somewhere between $1.025 billion and $1.175 billion. GAAP operating expenses are expected to be around $400 million and non GAAP ones around $359 million.
