PengPod Tablet Supposed to Cost $100, Dual Booting Android and Linux; Crowdfunding Project Behind It!

It’s not just Kickstarter that helps good initiatives take off and offers the option to fund them, but also the crowdfunding site Indiegogo, among others. This time the project involves a tablet, a dual booting one with Android and Linux as the choices, plus a $100 price tag. The product is supposed to be named PengPod and it’s shown below.

The company Peacock Imports is making the PengPod tablets, that are supposed to dual boot Android 4.0 and a version of Linux with the KDE Plasma Active Interface for touchscreens. In order to receive such a device, you would have to contribute to the company’s crowdfunding initiative on Indiegogo and help them gather enough money to begin production. For now the project started off slow, with merely $769 raised and with a goal of $49,000 that must be met by December 2nd.

Small donations start at $10 and they reserve bootable SD cards preloaded with Linux images, fit for PengPod devices. $99 will give you a PengPod 7 inch tablet with 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB SSD. If you donate $185 you will get a PengPod1000 10 inch tablet, with 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB SSD. For $85 there’s a PengStick, a mini PC that you can connect to a monitor or TV and run Android and Linux on it. The delivery time of the product is January 2013, but don’t get too excited about it, since nothing’s for sure. The tablets rely on a 1.2 GHz Cortex A8 ARM SoC from Allwinner Technology and both slates come with HDMI and USB ports. The 7 inch model has a 800 x 480 pixel resolution, while the bigger one has a 1024 x 600 pixel res.
