Shown at IFA 2012 last week, the Sony Xperia Tablet S has just been found on Sony Canada’s site, with a price tag of $499.99 and an “out of stock” mention. The device looks very much like the original Tablet S, with the folded magazine allure and all, but it gets a big specs bump.
The device runs Android 4.0 with the promise of getting Jelly Bean ASAP and it also has one touch power up universal remote feature, a Guest Mode and a splash proof case. When Sony presented the device, they said that the product would be available on September 7th in the USA, with preorders already available. The Xperia Tablet S will be available in 16GB, 32GB and 64 GB units and it appears that the 16GB one will actually cost $399.
Sony Xperia Tablet S is powered by an Nvidia Tegra 3 quad core CPU at 1.4 GHz and it also comes with an ULP GeForce GPU, a 9.4 inch HD display and an 8 megapixel rear camera. There’s also a 1 megapixel front camera and a 6000 mAh battery among the specs. The product comes in WiFi only and WiFi + 3G versions.
If you’re looking for a rugged tablet and have a bundle of cash laying around, you may as well purchases the new Getac Z710, that has just been released. We’re dealing with a 7 inch Gorilla Glass slate, priced at almost $2000, based on Android, although the version is not mentioned. The tablet is certified to withstand drops up to 6 feet, dust and liquid and it can be used in temperatures from minus 4 F, up to 122 F.
The device also comes with a sophisticated SiRFstar GPS sensor and gets the proprietary LumiBond technology, that means the touchscreen is glove-friendly. The device measures 8.5 x 5.6 inches and it’s just over one inch thick. It weighs less than two pounds and the Z710 can easily be carried around anywhere. Communication options on the device include WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G and other features include a HD webcam and a 5 megapixel camera. Barcode scanning and RFID configurations are available.
The product is designed for segments like public utilities, logistics and automotive, so you can easily use it on a construction site, in a factory and other places. The price of the Getac Z710 starts a $1499 with a 3G version at $1799. It ships in October.
Back in 2007 the new generation of portable PC was flourishing with Asus one of the top device manufacturers. They were called netbooks and were underpowered laptops smaller in size and supporting screen sizes from 8/9 to 14 inches.
The Intel Atom-powered PCs made by Asus haven’t been exactly highly successful though they did attract many costumers due to the brand image and high quality design. The EeePC line-up had become somewhat popular among consumers, mostly teenagers, who wished a very portable device with decent specs and good battery life. As Microsoft announced their new OS, also compatible with mobile devices and (at some level) touch friendly, Asus decided to kill it’s EeePC netbooks. It was a move to be expected since the manufacturer is mostly renowned for it’s tablet devices.
From now on Asus will concentrate on delivering good tablet products and they are already doping a great job. They are expected to expand their Transformer line-up with price friendly devices for all consumers. Further more, Asus is expected to deliver some of the best Windows 8 tablets on the market. We’re only one hour away from the debut of Nokia World 2012′s conference, that will include the unveiling of the first Nokia Lumia Windows Phone 8 devices. Now there’s a fresh rumor saying that Nokia might surprise us all with a new tablet, either today or in the near future, considering they are working on Windows tablets in California.
Insiders make these claims and say that the US project involves either Windows or Windows RT, with the source being a former Nokia exec, quoted by Finnish paper Tekniikka & Talous. Tablets are strangely missing from Nokia’s portofolio, although such devices have been approached by all major brands till now. Well, the company did try similar gadgets, like the 770 model with Maemo, but today’s definition for a tablet has changed. Years ago Nokia also tried to release the Nokia Booklet, a Windows 7 netbook, but it was a failure.
They must be careful with this product, especially considering Microsoft has a tablet of its own out there, so they wouldn’t want to outdo their protective wing, would they? With Acer frustrated about the Microsoft Surface tablet, I can’t imagine Nokia too happy about having to compete with its partner, if they do make a tablet… also careful about the price, that makes or breaks a product nowadays.
During today’s Nokia World 2012 event, there was the usual Q&A session after the launch of the new Lumia phones and during that session some interesting answers came out. Stephen Elop, Nokia CEO was the one answering the questions and when asked it Nokia will be making a Windows tablet, he said that he thinks the opportunity is clear.
He also says that people are looking for a digital experience suited for a smartphone and tablet and that Nokia is looking at this opportunity closely. We previously informed you that Nokia may unveil a surprise Windows 8 tablet before the event today started, but that didn’t come true. Well, that door is still open and Nokia could unveil something by the year end. Seeing how closely they’re working with Qualcomm on the Snapdragon-based Lumia 920 and 820 makes me think about a potential Windows RT Nokia tablet with quad core Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU.
Or they could go with Intel processing and Windows 8… The thing to be careful about here is pricing, since this will make or break a potential Nokia tablet. Would you buy one, especially if it brings larger Lumia-style design?
