Sony Xperia Tablet S Spotted on Sony Canada’s Site, with $499 Price Tag

Shown at IFA 2012 last week, the Sony Xperia Tablet S has just been found on Sony Canada’s site, with a price tag of $499.99 and an “out of stock” mention. The device looks very much like the original Tablet S, with the folded magazine allure and all, but it gets a big specs bump.

The device runs Android 4.0 with the promise of getting Jelly Bean ASAP and it also has one touch power up universal remote feature, a Guest Mode and a splash proof case. When Sony presented the device, they said that the product would be available on September 7th in the USA, with preorders already available. The Xperia Tablet S will be available in 16GB, 32GB and 64 GB units and it appears that the 16GB one will actually cost $399.

Sony Xperia Tablet S is powered by an Nvidia Tegra 3 quad core CPU at 1.4 GHz and it also comes with an ULP GeForce GPU, a 9.4 inch HD display and an 8 megapixel rear camera. There’s also a 1 megapixel front camera and a 6000 mAh battery among the specs. The product comes in WiFi only and WiFi + 3G versions.

ASUS VivoTab RT to Launch on AT&T on November 16th

We’ve already reviewed the ASUS VivoTab RT here and found it to be quite a decent tablet, with the only shortcomings being rather on the Windows RT side than the one of the OS. Now we find out that the slate is coming to AT&T stores and on the AT&T website starting November 16, meaning this Friday.

The product is priced at $499, but that requires a 2 year contract and a data plan. AT&T claims that the price tag is part of a special holiday promotion, so it won’t last a long while. They also have a special deal that shaves $100 off the price of the VivoTab RT if you buy a Windows Phone device and sign a 2 year plan for it. The ASUS VivoTab RT, also known as the ASUS Tablet 600 packs a 10.1 inch IPS display with a 1366 x 768 pixel resolution and under the hood it has a quad core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor.

Think of this product as some sort of Surface RT alternative, if you want. It also has 2 GB of RAM, an 8 megapixel camera that’s actually pretty good and can even do 1200p video capture. There’s also an optional keyboard dock for the device, that brings an extra two USB ports and extended battery life.

Europeans who picked up a 16GB Nexus 7 before Google dropped the price of the tablet on October 29th are being treated to a refund courtesy of ASUS. Those that purchased the slate directly from ASUS or Google are eligible to receive a €30 voucher provided they register their purchase a provide a receipt showing the date of the transaction.

Users are eligible to apply for a voucher through November 30th with funds expiring on December 31st. There is no word from ASUS as to whether or not a similar program will be implemented in other regions, particularly the US. Google is already taking a big enough hit on the Nexus 7 given its US pricing (in Europe, the exchange rates have the tablet selling for slightly higher), so refunds for American customers don’t seem likely.

Rumored Acer Iconia Tab A220 Leaked on GLBenchmark

Acer has launched its Acer Iconia Tab A110 tablet not to long ago and the device was set to compete in the 7-inch tablet market, against big players like Nexus 7 made by Asus and Amazon’s ne Kindle Fire HD. Acer’s tablet is packing an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core CPU, 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB internal storage, and runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean out of the box

It has been rumored that Acer is planing to announce before the end of the year another addition to the Iconia line-up. The Acer Iconia Tab A220 was spotted courtesy of GLBenchmark results, featuring Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean and slightly better specs then the A110. The tablet is powered by the same Tegra 3 chipset, clocked at 1.3 Ghz and it features a 1.280 x 752 display as opposed to the 1.024 x 600 display in the previous model.

When Sony presented the device, they said that the product would be available on September 7th in the USA, with preorders already available. The Xperia Tablet S will be available in 16GB, 32GB and 64 GB units and it appears that the 16GB one will actually cost $399.

If you’re looking for a rugged tablet and have a bundle of cash laying around, you may as well purchases the new Getac Z710, that has just been released. We’re dealing with a 7 inch Gorilla Glass slate, priced at almost $2000, based on Android, although the version is not mentioned. The tablet is certified to withstand drops up to 6 feet, dust and liquid and it can be used in temperatures from minus 4 F, up to 122 F.

The device also comes with a sophisticated SiRFstar GPS sensor and gets the proprietary LumiBond technology, that means the touchscreen is glove-friendly. The device measures 8.5 x 5.6 inches and it’s just over one inch thick. It weighs less than two pounds and the Z710 can easily be carried around anywhere. Communication options on the device include WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G and other features include a HD webcam and a 5 megapixel camera. Barcode scanning and RFID configurations are available.

The product is designed for segments like public utilities, logistics and automotive, so you can easily use it on a construction site, in a factory and other places. The price of the Getac Z710 starts a $1499 with a 3G version at $1799. It ships in October.

Back in 2007 the new generation of portable PC was flourishing with Asus one of the top device manufacturers. They were called netbooks and were underpowered laptops smaller in size and supporting screen sizes from 8/9 to 14 inches.

The Intel Atom-powered PCs made by Asus haven’t been exactly highly successful though they did attract many costumers due to the brand image and high quality design. The EeePC line-up had become somewhat popular among consumers, mostly teenagers, who wished a very portable device with decent specs and good battery life. As Microsoft announced their new OS, also compatible with mobile devices and (at some level) touch friendly, Asus decided to kill it’s EeePC netbooks. It was a move to be expected since the manufacturer is mostly renowned for it’s tablet devices.

From now on Asus will concentrate on delivering good tablet products and they are already doping a great job. They are expected to expand their Transformer line-up with price friendly devices for all consumers. Further more, Asus is expected to deliver some of the best Windows 8 tablets on the market. Good Bye EeePCs, say hello Windows 8 tablets.

We’re only one hour away from the debut of Nokia World 2012′s conference, that will include the unveiling of the first Nokia Lumia Windows Phone 8 devices. Now there’s a fresh rumor saying that Nokia might surprise us all with a new tablet, either today or in the near future, considering they are working on Windows tablets in California.

Insiders make these claims and say that the US project involves either Windows  or Windows RT, with the source being a former Nokia exec, quoted by Finnish paper Tekniikka & Talous. Tablets are strangely missing from Nokia’s portofolio, although such devices have been approached by all major brands till now. Well, the company did try similar gadgets, like the 770 model with Maemo, but today’s definition for a tablet has changed. Years ago Nokia also tried to release the Nokia Booklet, a Windows 7 netbook, but it was a failure.

They must be careful with this product, especially considering Microsoft has a tablet of its own out there, so they wouldn’t want to outdo their protective wing, would they? With Acer frustrated about the Microsoft Surface tablet, I can’t imagine Nokia too happy about having to compete with its partner, if they do make a tablet… also careful about the price, that makes or breaks a product nowadays.

During today’s Nokia World 2012 event, there was the usual Q&A session after the launch of the new Lumia phones and during that session some interesting answers came out. Stephen Elop, Nokia CEO was the one answering the questions and when asked it Nokia will be making a Windows tablet, he said that he thinks the opportunity is clear.

He also says that people are looking for a digital experience suited for a smartphone and tablet and that Nokia is looking at this opportunity closely. We previously informed you that Nokia may unveil a surprise Windows 8 tablet before the event today started, but that didn’t come true. Well, that door is still open and Nokia could unveil something by the year end. Seeing how closely they’re working with Qualcomm on the Snapdragon-based Lumia 920 and 820 makes me think about a potential Windows RT Nokia tablet with quad core Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU.

Or they could go with Intel processing and Windows 8… The thing to be careful about here is pricing, since this will make or break a potential Nokia tablet. Would you buy one, especially if it brings larger Lumia-style design?

Global Tablet Market Prepared for Strong Shipment Growth in Q4 2012

Digitimes Research has come up with a new report, showing that the global tablet market is expected to grow quite a bit as far as shipments go, in Q4 2012. Global tablet shipments from big brands will jump to 40.93 million units in the last 3 months of the 2012 fiscal year.

This stands for a 72.7% increase sequentially and 89.7% on the year, according to James Wang, Digitimes Research senior analyst. Apple will remain the biggest vendor of tablets worldwide, while Amazon will take second place and Google will be third thanks to Nexus 7 and Nexus 10. Microsoft is expected to place fourth and Samsung fifth, while Barnes & Noble has the sixth spot. ASUS, Lenovo and Acer occupy the next places in the top. Texas Instruments will be the second largest tablet processor supplier, followed by Nvidia at third place.

Intel also makes the top thanks to Microsoft’s option for their CPUs on Windows 8 devices. Taiwanese slate makers will ship about 36.6 million tablets combined in Q4, a 82.3% increase sequentially. Foxconn is the largest tablet maker, followed by Quanta Computer, Pegatron, Wistron and Compal. Overall the iPad will represent 63% of the volume of tablets shipped this year, down 2% from last year, while Android increased significantly.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Update Reaches Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, Germany’s First!

Samsung has started updating the Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet, that we reviewed right here to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. SamMobile is reporting that the German Galaxy Note 10.1 is the first one to get the fresh software, that’s being pushed out to the pen-packing slate.

It totals to a 300 MB over the air download and after upgrading, the devices should run software version N8000XXBLJ9. The update arrives 3 months after the Galaxy Note 10.1 was launched in Europe and USA with Android 4.0 ICS. With this new update, the device is expected to get snappier, more responsive thanks to Project Butter and get more software goodies like Google Now. No idea what’s happening with the other Note 10.1 units outside Germany, but I’m guessing they’ll get the update soon, too.

If you want to get the software by yourselves, in the source link below there’s an ODIN-flashable version of the German ROM available. As usual, we recommend you to wait for the official software. Hopefully Android 4.2 will come faster to this quad core slate with 2 GB of RAM.

If you’re preparing to buy a brand new Windows 8 tablet or Android slate, know that AT&T will offer you a selection of both, through the Samsung Ativ Smart PC and Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 models. The carrier will sell the Windows 8 tablet for $800 and the Android one for $500. Expect the products to drop by November 9th and the prices previously mentioned only apply without contract.

If you want the Samsung Ativ Smart PC to turn into a laptop/desktop you can get it with a $49 Stand Dock and a $40 VGA adapter, both coming in late November. AT&T will also bring a promo offer through the holidays, that cuts $100 off the tablet price, if you’re ready to shell out cash for a Samsung phone. For those of you who don’t know, the Samsung ATIV Smart PC features a 11.6 inch HD PLS screen, 64 GB of storage, a microSD card slot and an Intel Atom dual core processor with a frequency of up to 1.5 GHz. It comes preinstalled with Windows 8 Pro, with support for upgrade to Windows 8 Pro.

ATIV Smart PC also bundles a trial version of Microsoft Office 2010. As far as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 goes, this 10.1 inch slate was released in May and it features a PLS TFT screen with a 1280 x 800 pixel resolution, 16/32 GB of storage, 1 GB of RAM, stereo speakers, a decent 3.15 MP camera and Android 4.0.3 preinstalled. Inside there’s a dual core 1 GHz Cortex A9 processor.

Microsoft Surface Pro Gets Priced in Germany, Goes for Almost $1000

If you’re looking to buy the Microsoft Surface tablet, but you want the added extra value of the Intel CPU and the Pro version of Windows 8, you will pay a premium price tag for those. And especially if you live in Germany, where the following prices apply…

A recent leak has shown us that the Surface Pro tablet will go for almost $1000, as published by German online retailer Notebook.de. The x86 Windows 8 Surface Pro tablet goes for $870 in the 64 GB version without tax, while the 128 GB model costs $975. For that price you get a Full HD screen, Intel Core i5 CPU, 4 GB of RAM, Intel HD 4000 graphics, Bluetooth 4.0, VaporMG case and even a stylus on board. 2 years of warranty are available here.

The product weighs almost 1 kilo, so it’s not on the light side… at all. Notebook.de is saying that the tablets will be available in about 3-4 weeks, which we doubt, since everyone expect Windows 8 Surface slates to debut in January next year. An early arrival would make for a sweet Christmas gift, though.

Google Nexus 10 Review Roundup: Great Hardware, Fantastic Price, “Too Good” Screen, Some Flaws

Exactly one week ago, after a long period of speculations, Google made official the Nexus 10 tablet made by Samsung. The device had previously leaked in pictures and we had all the specs we needed to get a decent opinion regarding the device. Now the first reviews of the product have started coming and we rounded them up in a collection of 5 best analysis of its qualities and defects. It appears that all reviewers are praising the price and some are even saying that the screen is too good… Let’s find out more!

1) Engadget review – Can’t Distance Itself from Similar Android tablets

The folks of Engadget, in this case Tim Stevens did a detailed analysis of the newcomer and apparently they were not quite impressed by the latest Google slate. While they did praise the Nexus 7, they claim that the Nexus 01 isn’t that much separated from the rest of the bunch of 10 inch high end Android slates. This Samsung made tablet goes for $399, which is a good bargain, but so is the ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity and sometimes it’s even more appealing than this model. They praise the incredible rendering of text on the screen and the way the UI looks on the fantastic 2560 x 1600 pixel display. There’s also a piece of good news: Android apps natively support higher resolutions without problems or blurry texts.

The bad thing is the battery, that gives you merely 7 hours of functioning time and overall this model doesn’t quite differentiate a lot from other 10 inch Android slates.

2) Slashgear review – Everything perfect aside from lack of apps

Slashgear’s Vincent Nguyen describes the product as one that features incredible specs, an very high resolution display and highly capable processor. The good thing about the Nexus 10 is that it doesn’t make compromises like the Nexus 7 to achieve a lower price. It’s got Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, it’s perfect for browsing and multimedia playback and text and image have never been so crisp before. The lack of apps is definitely a problem here and developers must shift a gear up to catch on to the iOS bigshots. The 9000 mAh battery is strangely said to achieve 11 hours this time, unlike the Engadget test, so this is kind of strange. Photo Sphere is also described as very nice, but only outdoor, while indoor it has stitching problems.

The conclusion? The True RGB Real Stripe PLS screen is the selling point here and Slashgear is very happy with the product, even battery life.

3) CNET review – Superior design, great performance, long battery charge and some more flaws

The folks of CNET, in this case Eric Franklin is saying that the device’s superior design and swift performance, plus the $399 price tag make it really appealing. Its 8.9 mm thickness and 603 grams weight also help with keeping it portable and killing any HDTV on the market with a superior resolution in your backpack. However, the bundled charger isn’t able to power the battery enough for you to play a game whine charging and even normal charge is a pain to wait for. No storage expansion is also an important lack and once again the lack of apps for such a high end tablet is mentioned. They even go out and say that the navigation isn’t quite seamless, as on the Nexus 7, so the product is basically a letdown, if you read all the review.

The bad thing here is that the same games look poorer and run slower on the Nexus 10 compared to the iPad 3… So I guess that the apps will make a difference when choosing the slate, that by the way is no iPad killer.

4) Wired review – Gorgeous display, great Exynos CPU, thin tablet, no MicroSD card slot

Wired’s Nathan Olivarez-Giles feels that there’s not enough Nexus in this device, when it comes to styling, so it may feel too much like Samsung and too little like Google in the end. The reviewer calls the styling “safe, reserved” and mentions the problem of the lack of tablet apps in Google Play and the lack of a microSD card slot. An advantage for this model is that unlike any other Samsung tablet, it won’t wait for months to get the latest Android update, being first in line thanks to the Nexus status. The gorgeous display, 2 GB of RAM and Exynos next gen CPU also make the device exciting, while the 5 MP camera at the back is actually described as pretty good.

Gripping coating and a thin waistline are also big advantages and battery life gets praised yet again. So, overall a very good device, with a lot of potential once it gets big enough sales to motivate developers to create apps for it.

5) ZDNet review – Setting the standard for other tablet manufacturers in the future

ZDNet’s Rupert Goodwins is the first of the bunch to mention the lack of 3G or LTE connectivity as a flaw on this device, plus the obvious lack of tablet apps. The need for a lot of charging time is mentioned and also an interesting aspect: the lack of enterprise friendly features. On the positive side, this is actually the highest specced tablet one can buy right now and it costs just $400. The audio is also praised, as well as the behaviour of the CPU and Android 4.2, that feels mature and usable. Build quality is at premium levels and benchmarks are pretty good, although the Nexus 10 doesn’t beat the iPad 3 or Nexus 7 by much.

At least in Geekbench, that measures processor and memory performance the device impressed, clearly beating the iPad 3 and possibly even the iPad 4. So overall very good hardware, not so good software, because of lack of apps.

Those reviews have one thing in common: the people cry out for more Android tablet apps and I wonder how hard it is to port some cool games to this platform? How much could it cost Google to actually port all the PlayStation 2 or even PS3 games to tablets? They would pay Sony up and that’s it… Anyway, reviews are divided when it comes to battery life, with some praising it and other criticizing it. All the reviews seemed to appreciate the display and the build quality, though, so overall this sounds like an 8.5 out of 10 tablet…

Chuwi V99 Tablet Features Retina Display Resolution, Sells for Less Than $300

Now with the Nexus 10 tablet announced, a huge resolution on a 10 inch tablet doesn’t seem that unusual anymore and it’s not even reserved to Apple anymore. There’s now a new Android model with such a resolution, the Chuwi V99, a slate from Asia that packs a dual core CPU and a 2048 x 1536 display.

The screen has a 9.7 inch diagonal and its features include a dual core Rockchip RK3066 processor, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and possibly 1 GB of RAM. With the Google Nexus 10 weeks away from its debut, at $399, you can pick up the Chuwi V99 for $250 to $290, according to different retail websites. The only problem I have with this model is that it may end up being quite a battery eater, with such a screen.

The tablet seems to be quite similar to the iPad, having the same size, shape and weight. The folks who tested the device says that the text and images look very crisp on the display, compared to lower resolution slates. The 4:3 aspect ratio makes the slate easier to hold in both portrait and landscape mode, compared to tablets with widescreen displays. Frankly speaking, the picture here makes the display look washed up and I hope it’s the fault of the pictures, not the device.
