Android adoption rate six times that of the iPhone, mobile to surpass PC in 2013

Mary Meeker, best known for her yearly Internet Trends report, provided an update to some of her figures from earlier in 2012 while speaking at a Bloomberg event in San Francisco. Her focus was strong mobile growth, which was highlighted by news that the adoption rate of Android smartphones is now six times that of Apple’s iPhone. Back in May the figure was four to one.

By the end of 2013, Android is expected to far surpass the 90 million devices shipped per quarter quoted for Q1 of 2012, which is double the expected number for Apple. Meeker’s estimates have 80 million iOS devices shipped per quarter by the end of the next calendar year.

The numbers all contribute to a growing mobile field that will overtake the PC industry by the middle of next year, according to Meeker. With an expected 6 billion mobile users (1 billion of which are smartphone users) by the end of 2012, the combined install base of tablets and smartphones will outnumber the install base of desktop and notebook computers. Android has already overtaken Windows PCs in terms of units shipped per quarter.

It all adds up to a reality that is becoming more apparent every day as users shift from a single computing experience to one that features multiple devices backed by cloud storage. Has the smartphone completely replaced the personal computer for anyone out there? It would be interesting to see if Meeker’s figures correlate directly to user habits in that way.

Google Delay Nexus Launch

Google have unfortunately had to cancel today’s Nexus launch event due to a hurricane moving in on the East coast of the US.

I have family in the area so hope it passes by uneventfully, stay safe people.

Google have promised to reschedule soon and we’ll let you know as soon as we hear more.

Nexus Product Announcements

It was thought that a few new products would be announced:

• ASUS Nexus 7 32gb version, and possibly a 3G model
• Nexus 4 Phone from LG
• Nexus 10 tablet from Samsung

It is also thought that a new version of Android would also be announced, you can read the latest on Android 4.2 here.

Whilst we wait for news, here is a short clip of what is thought to be leaked footage of the new Nexus 10 in action.

32gb Model @Argos

We’ve also heard a number of stories about the 32gb version being listed in a new Argos catalog under reference 508/9325.

A big thanks to the Twitter user who decided to check this out in store, having tapped that reference into the stock checker he found the Nexus 7 listed up for £199.

32GB Nexus 7 in stock at Walmart for $249, 16GB model now $199

Although the Google event scheduled for this morning has been delayed as Hurricane Sandy bears downs on the East Coast, at least one retailer is going ahead with a refresh of their Nexus portfolio. Walmart’s website now lists the new 32GB Nexus 7 as in stock and features a price drop for the 16GB model. The 8GB Nexus 7 is no longer shown for sale.

The 32GB model comes in at the expected price point of $249, but perhaps the bigger news is that the 16GB model has dropped to $199, replacing the 8GB model at that price. It is unclear if Google plans to continue sales of the smallest storage option with a similar price cut as the 16GB model or if that device will be discontinued. Not present on the retailer’s site is the rumored 3G Nexus 7, which was also to be unveiled this morning at the New York City press event.

Google’s Play Store now lists both the 8GB and 16GB Nexus 7 as “coming soon” rather than on sale, a sign that a refresh should soon occur. It was expected that the tech giant would introduce a refreshed tablet lineup today that included the 32GB Nexus 7 along with a new Nexus 10 tablet developed by Samsung. The star of the show, however, would have been the LG Nexus 4, the next addition to the lineup of pure Google smartphones.

Google may still proceed with the rollout of the new Nexus 7 products today, but we are awaiting word from the company about plans to reschedule their Nexus event.

32GB Google Nexus 7 UK release date revealed, hitting stores tomorrow

EXCLUSIVE: Pocket-lint told by PC World

Today's Nexus New York press event may have been postponed due to severe (life-threatening) weather warnings, but the 32GB Google Nexus 7 is still planned to hit UK stores tomorrow (30 October).

An assistant in a London branch of Currys & PC World told us that the version of the tablet device with a higher storage capacity than its stablemates will be available to buy from "tomorrow" or "online tonight".

"We've sold out of the 16GB models because the 32GB comes tomorrow," the assistant told us in a very matter of fact way. "You can order it online tonight and arrange to collect it in store if you like."?

It had been rumoured for a week or two that the Asus-made device would be made available this week, and that Google had started to drop the price of its 16GB equivalent to ?160 in?preparation, but now we know the exact date.

In the US, there are reports that the 32GB edition has already started to hit shelves. American store chain The Office Depot has put 32GB Nexus 7 models "on display" and some consumers are claiming that they were able to purchase them.

With the iPad mini going on sale this Friday (2 November), Google is clearly attempting to steal Apple's thunder by offering a premium version of its competitive tablet several days beforehand. And at a much cheaper price point (believed to by ?199).

Kindle Fire HD vs iPad Mini – Challenge Started by Amazon

Apple has finally launched the iPad Mini, 7.9-inch display tablet, along with the iPad (4) at a special event in San Jose. During the presentation of the new Mini tablet, Apple wasn’t afraid to compare their products with other offers on the market, hinting at the Nexus 7 and calling their tablet the best available in the category.

While the iPad Mini is a great device, it has some shortcomings that can be deal breakers for some. The first is the resolution of the screen, 1024 x 768 pixels, that is less than the competition offers.  Next there is the price, with $429 for the 32GB and $529 for the 64GB variants. The LTE enabled devices cost at least $459, with $100 price bumps as you increase the storage. Given this circumstances, Amazon thought it best to reveal the advantages of purchasing their device over the iPad Mini.

Amazon has started a campaign against the iPad Mini. One of their strongest arguments is the “low” resolution display that the Apple device offers, at only 163 ppi. Another aspect they consider to be relevant, is that the Mini only offers a mono speaker, as opposed to the stereo speakers of the Kindle Fire HD. The last argument is the pricing – with the Fire HD going for $199 while the iPad Mini’s price tag is $329. Whether these argument are enough to change the feelings of the potential costumers is an aspect that remains to be seen.
