iPad Mini Wins Eye Tracking Study, Most Recognized and Wanted Device of the Bunch

A recent study done by the folks of EyeTrackShop involved the top 7 inch tablets and placed them in front of participants, tracking their eye movements. The aim here was to determine which one was the most popular model among them. The duelling devices were the iPad Mini, Nexus 7, Nook HD and Kindle Fire HD.

Test subjects had a glance at them and then at the company’s current advertising campaign, with the result being that the iPad Mini won with a 40% higher purchase intent than its rivals. This means that just by looking at the Apple 7.9 inch tablet, users became more interested in buying it than the rival products. It seems that Apple applying for the “rectangle with curved corners” is paying off, since its format has become recognizable by the masses.

The study was conducted on 600 users who allowed access to their webcams and were shown the tablets before being asked follow-up questions. About 25% of the respondents said that they intend to buy a tablet within a month. Heat mapping and gaze opacity were analyzed in the study. The Kindle Fire HD was second when it comes to recognition, getting 52% recognition, compared to the iPad Mini’s 73%. Most respondents said that the price is a very important aspect when shopping for a new product.

Humble Bundle for Android 4 now available, pay what you want for 6 great indie games

The folks at Humble Bundle have just launched their fourth collection for Android devices. This time around the pay-what-you-want package features six great games from developers such as Omni Systems, Kloonigames, and more. If you aren’t familiar with the Humble Bundle model, buyers are asked to pay as much or as little as they want with the ability to decide how much of that payment goes towards the developers, Humble, and a selection of charities.

Always curating some of the best Android has to offer, the latest bundle will be available for two weeks only and includes Crayon Physics Deluxe, Eufloria, Splice, Superbrothers Sword & Sorcery EP, and Waking Mars. Those choosing to pay higher than the average amount will also be treated to Amanita Design’s Machinarium. It’s a great opportunity to get your hands on some of the best indie games available for Android at a great price (and a few that are only available for the first time as part of Humble’s offer). And you can guarantee you are supporting the developers who take time to craft such experiences.

In just the few hours since the latest Bundle has launched, the games have already pulled in over $20,000 (though the number is skyrocketing quickly). The average purchase is just a little over $5, which is small bucks to pay for what will amount to hours of entertainment. So go over and grab this awesome collection before time runs out!

Android Director Talks Nexus Development, Details Prices of Devices

The folks of NY Times recently sat down with John Lagerling, the director of business development for Android and asked him a few questions. From the series of questions we found out stuff like the reasons of the Nexus device pricing, Nexus development and more.

Lagerling claims that his favourite feature of the new Nexus devices is the 360 degree panoramic photo, called Photo Sphere. There’s also the ability to do inductive charging, so you don’t have to bother with a plug. He also describes the Nexus 10 as very thin and light and the resolution is very good, at 2.5K, so the pics are very crisp and so is the text. The most interesting question was how Google managed to keep prices of the new Nexus devices so low.

John Lagerling said that they didn’t want to charge people $600 for a phone belonging to the latest generation. He felt the current prices are unreasonable and mentioned the Nexus 7 as positive example for pricing. The choice of price, $299 for Nexus 4 and $399 for Nexus 10 is the best Google could achieve for these models. The official said that he felt the 10 inch tablets were underpowered and overpriced and this is where Samsung jumped in and saved the day. More insight into the Nexus devices can be found in the source link!

Microsoft Surface RT is an Overhyped Product: Analysis of a Rant (Video)

The folks of Techcrunch posted an interesting rant on how overhyped the whole Microsoft Surface RT thing is and we decided to analyse their arguments. First, they claim that Microsoft rushed to the market with a product that doesn’t feel quite complete. They do find Windows 8 to be a solid OS and a great step forward, but that’s about it…

The unification of Windows Phone and Windows Phone is already embraced and the future will ease the process, as the public gets used to the common experience. Techcrunch also claims that Microsoft, in its usual fashion launched its worst product first. The thing is that all reviewers out there are out to get Windows RT and criticize it, especially for being slow and not totally taking advantage of the provided hardware. Microsoft is a bit to blame for this, since they created huge expectations around the product and the hype was killed by the wave of negative reviews.

We actually did a positive review for Windows RT, highlighting what’s positive about it and the potential it leaves open for the future. It’s true that the OS feels rather “green” and young, but we are dealing with a desktop OS morphed for mobile use, so what did you expect? Apple and Google came out with a totally new platform for mobile, while Microsoft has to turn something that feels old into something new, that’s infinitely harder than inventing something new… So what’s your take on Windows RT and the Surface, loved more for its hardware and design than anything else?
